Herstory of European Feminist Forum
The monograph The European Feminist Forum. A herstory (2004-2008) was written by six European Feminists of different backgrounds, cultures, countries or who tried to construct a feminist vision for a social, economic and political justice in Europe. The main conclusion from the EFF experience is that there is no one European feminism but a plurivocality of European women’s voices that are taking up feminism in different themes and activities.
KARAT was actively involved in EFF since its beginning and contributed to writing its herstory.

Configuring Labour Rights
“Workers producing computer parts are still working long hours for low wages and have no possibility to organize themselves to demand improved conditions.”, says Esther de Haan from the Center for Research on Multionational Corporations (SOMO), coordinator of makeITfair.

Researchers from SOMO and the Philippine Workers’ Assistance Center (WAC) interviewed workers and managers of electronic factories in the Philippines in 2006 and 2008. The new report Configuring Labour Rights reveals that labour conditions have hardly improved despite the fact that some suppliers have upgraded policy and efforts and several computer companies have taken efforts to audit the labour conditions in the Philippines.

At a time of financial crisis the millions of women, who are employed in factories and workshops and make the clothes on sale in supermarkets, are paying for the profits of the gigantic global retailers such as Carrefour, Tesco, Aldi, Lidl, and Walmart.

The report in Polish is available in three parts:    1     2     3

Women employed in supermarkets
On June 19, 2009 a conference: “Labour Rights of Women employed in Supermarkets – preventing infringements, protection, improvement of the working conditions” took place in Warsaw. It was the next event from a cycle of meetings organised within the project "Labour Rights Protection from Gender Perspective in Super/Hypermarkets in Poland”.

The aim of the conference was to emphasis the poor working conditions offered by super/hypermarkets to their employees, in majority women, as well as ways of protecting labour rights and preventing the abuses and violations. It is especially important in times of economic crisis, when we observe in Poland that amendments to e.g. Labour Code, instead of strengthening, weaken the position of the most vulnerable groups of employees.

Call for fair mobile phones

On the occasion of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day on May 17, thousands of signatories will put pressure on mobile phone companies across Europe to pay greater attention to fair labour standards. "This campaign, organised by makeITfair, collected more than 8,000 signatures calling for fair pay and better labour rights in supplier countries such as China. It shows that consumers are beginning to be more aware about the source of their mobile phones and that there is a demand for fair phones,” says Esther de Haan from makeITfair coordinator SOMO. More than half of all mobile phones in use worldwide are produced in China. Migrant workers work up to 12 hours a day, earning only around 40 Euro cents an hour, which is not enough to cover their basic living expenses.

New makeITfair report

The new report titled “Out of control. E-waste trade flows from the EU to developing countries” was published by SwedWatch as a part of the makeITfair Campaign.

As the consumption of electronics has increased rapidly the last years, so has the waste made up of discarded products. The UN estimates that up to 50 million tonnes of e-waste may be generated in the world each year, which is enough to fill a line of trucks stretching half way around the entire globe. - wrote Sara Nordbrand, project coordinator from SwedWatch.

Open letter to Prime Minister of Poland
On 3 March 2009 KARAT sent an open letter to Prime Minister Waldemar Pawlak – Chairman of the Three-Sided Commission (government-employers-trade unions) regarding our recommendations to the amendements to the labour law. These recommendations serve the purpose of more effective protection of the employees rights.
Recommendations are prepared by the experts cooperating with KARAT within the activities aiming at improvement of the working conditions in super/hypermarkets in Poland and more efficient employees’ rights protection system from gender perspective.
In our opinion, Three-Sided Comission, while working over new solutions regarding labour law, should take under consideration the needs of the most vulnarable groups, to which for sure belong women. It is also especially important to avoid the situation that, in times of global economic crisis, the regres in the field of the employees’ rights will take place.

MakeITfair in Budapest
MakeITfair Campaign invites forcapacity building training, taking place on 17th of February in Budapest, Hungary.
MakeITfair is a European campaign, raising awareness about developmental issues in the production of consumer electronics, such as mobile phones, MP3 players and laptops. We want to let people across Europe know about the labour abuses and environmental problems that are going on right now around the world – just to satisfy our demand for all the latest electronic gadgets. We want to encourage people to get active to improve the situation. We are trying to hold big brand electronics companies to account – asking them to take responsibility for the labour abuses and environmental damage at the bottom of their supply chain.
